Chronic Disease: It’s Not Just in Your Genes

Many chronic conditions have far more to do with lifestyle and less to do with genetics alone than most people realize. What you learned about your body in your high school science class is outdated at best, and potentially even harmful.

For years, we were told that chronic illness is written into our DNA — that if it runs in the family, it’s simply our fate. But the growing field of epigenetics tells a more hopeful story. Epigenetics is the study of how our environment and daily choices influence gene expression — essentially flipping certain genes “on” or “off” without changing the underlying DNA sequence itself. Genetics may load the gun, but lifestyle often pulls the trigger.

Take smoking as an example. Some people smoke for decades and never develop lung cancer, while others who never touched a cigarette become horribly sick. Genetics plays a role in why some bodies are more resilient to certain exposures than others — but it’s rarely the whole story. Diet, stress, sleep, movement, and environmental toxin exposure all shape the internal environment your genes are responding to every day.

At Island Holistic Wellness, I look at chronic and complex health concerns as the result of many things working together: cumulative toxin exposure, unresolved stress, nutrient-poor diets, sedentary habits, and too little time outdoors in natural sunlight. None of these factors act alone, and understanding how they interact is often the first step toward real, lasting change.

This is actually good news. If our genes were the only thing determining our health, we would have very little say in the matter. But because environment and lifestyle carry so much weight, the daily choices you make — what you eat, how you move, how you manage stress, how much natural light you get, and how well you support your body’s own detoxification — actually matter. This is the foundation of naturopathic medicine: instead of only managing symptoms, we look at the whole picture and help your body do what it’s designed to do.
